Sam Ayre’s practice centres on conversation and collaboration, seeking to build community as much through the relationships formed while foraging for offcuts as through the creation of objects. Each piece of wood was sourced through conversations in different places—sawmills, joiners, and sites of storm-felled trees, and each explores a range of carpentry techniques, including planing, carving, and joinery, using tools inherited from the artist’s grandfather. The ambition of the work is to unite these conversations and, in turn, to prompt future ones.
