The Spring by the Rib by He Qi

He Qi engages in a process of visual translation upon these twentieth-century textiles, employing the technique of weaving. The resulting compositions evoke a state of fluidity, approaching a montage of shifting perspectives constructed from a succession of discrete moments. Within this constellation, fragments of memory persist concurrently as residues and as agents of recollection.

About the Artist

He Qi aims to help people perceive and understand hidden or overlooked emotions by capturing fleeting emotional moments. Through her practice, she seeks to promote awareness and acceptance of both personal and collective emotions, fostering a more harmonious relationship between the self and the world within an accelerating society. Her work spans sculptural installations, hand-dyed textiles, painting, and video, each designed to connect with viewers’ inner worlds and evoke reflection and emotional resonance.

Foam glass serves as her primary medium. Its ethereal and dreamlike materiality aptly conveys the transient and ever-changing nature of emotions that she seeks to capture. Moving beyond traditional glass casting techniques, she integrates the unique colouring properties of foam glass with manual dyeing processes, endowing the material with distinctive textures and tactile qualities.
