About the Artist

Candice Crotet is a textile artist from the French countryside. As a child, she would imagine musical theatre scenes while cycling along the paths of her village, later sketching the stories she had dreamt up upon returning home. Over the years, she explored abstract painting and photography, using portraiture as a means of bearing witness to her daily life.

With the rise of social media and the ubiquity of everyday images, she stepped away from photography to focus on music, dance, and the natural world. In 2022, through the very networks that had distanced her from photography, she discovered quilting. Working by hand, she experiments with the traditional codes of quilting, transforming them into something vivid, contemporary, and political.

Her quilts—acidulous, pop, and boldly coloured—are made primarily from reclaimed fabrics. Warm and joyful tones contrast with the themes they depict. Pink, long rejected through internalised misogyny, becomes a recurring motif and a process of reappropriation.

Crotet’s quilts speak of envelopes, psychic containment, and the integration of the many parts of the self. Yet, true to the original spirit of quilting, her practice also embodies resilience and comfort, quiet moments for the mind, slow gestures for the body.
