A Quiet Gaze Through the Frame

Hyeyeon Chung’s drawings and landscape paintings are often presented within vintage frames—not merely as decorative elements, but as symbolic devices of the observer’s gaze. Much like peering through an old telescope, the frame invites the viewer to look into a scene that is both intimate and distant. In doing so, the work reflects Martin Heidegger’s notion of the dynamic tension between ‘world’ and ‘earth.’

Here, the ‘world’ is not only the realm of human relationships and culture but, as Heidegger suggests, the domain where language makes meaning and understanding possible. The ‘earth,’ in contrast, remains a grounding force—silent, withdrawn, and resistant to complete revelation.

About the Artist

Hyeyeon Chung explores the intersections of memory, landscape, and diasporic experience through monochrome mark-making and textile-inspired surfaces. Her meditative compositions blur truth and perception, weaving abstraction with nostalgia. She has exhibited internationally, with solo shows in Berlin and Seoul and recent group exhibitions in London.
