'Clothed in air, the hills become blue' is a quote from Living Mountain by Nan Shepherd, who spent her life exploring and engaging with Cairngorm mountain (meaning 'The Blue Hill' in Gaelic). Her intense, poetic prose composed during the Second World War in the Scottish Highlands is a powerful meditation on nature.
Sculptor and stone letter carver Liz Middleton felt a connection between Nan Shepherd's words and Van Gogh's paintings through their shared intense observation of landscape. The embossed lettering activated by raking light is pressed from inscribed blue slate.
About the Artist:
Middleton's practice is driven by a fascination with materials, process and place. The qualities, characteristics and narrative of materials. Processes that create or leave traces of an interaction with life, and the uniqueness of place, where all these elements combine to evoke a distinctive resonance.
