Throughout his life, nature and gardening were sources of not only creative impetus, but also great personal enjoyment for the romantic Van Gogh. He writes about gardening throughout his life, and specifically about the flowers he planted at our garden in 87 Hackford Road.
"I’m doing a lot of gardening and have sown sweet peas, poppies and reseda, now we just have to wait and see what comes of it."

"I’m painting with the gusto of a Marseillais eating bouillabaisse, which won’t surprise you when it’s a question of painting large Sunflowers"
