Throughout his life, nature and gardening were sources of not only creative impetus, but also great personal enjoyment for the romantic Van Gogh. He writes about gardening throughout his life, and specifically about the flowers he planted at our garden in 87 Hackford Road.

"I’m doing a lot of gardening and have sown sweet peas, poppies and reseda, now we just have to wait and see what comes of it."

Vincent van Gogh to his brother Theo
April 1874

We have curated a selection of Van Gogh's most beloved flowers and plants from London-based heritage seeds merchant Thomas Etty. The seeds of these historical 19th century breeds we have chosen have been carefully bred and preserved so they are the exactly same as when Van Gogh would have had them!

"I’m painting with the gusto of a Marseillais eating bouillabaisse, which won’t surprise you when it’s a question of painting large Sunflowers"

In letter, Vincent van Gogh to his brother Theo van Gogh
Tuesday, 21 or Wednesday, 22 August 1888

"But precisely for one’s health, as you say – it’s very necessary to work in the garden and to see the flowers growing."

In letter, Vincent van Gogh To his mother and sister, Anna v. Gogh-Carbentus and Willemien v. Gogh
about Thursday, 10 and Monday, 14 July 1890
