Towards the end of his life – afraid that his secrets would disappear with his death – he dictated his life’s knowledge of oil and water in a document entitled Suminigashi-zome (1913). In the early 1970s the Have a Nice Day smiley and maxim were everywhere across the United States. Everywhere. Stickers, buttons, badges, posters, t-shirts appeared everywhere... Almost overnight. The Have a Nice Day smiley actually started out as a Have a Happy Day smiley and was coined by two brothers from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The colors for our Summer 2021 Smiley Face are rooted in the Philadelphia Sunflowers (one of five Sunflower paintings). Me and two of my brothers were born in Philadelphia. When researching the time he spent in London and reading his letters, I noticed how very diligent and logical he was. He was working as an art dealer, tirelessly studying how the art world works. When he started painting, he was a treasure trove of knowledge, and it was this that helped him develop his method and become an artist. the process is unrestrainable, logical and it makes sense - at least more sense than creating art purely out of passion. The focal point of my poster is the slogan 觉而不迷. Coming from the teachings of Buddhism, it says that ‘understanding frees our minds from obsession’ because we are awake and see things in their real light. I used my hands to cover the mountains, mimicking the landscape and showing that I am present in the moment - self aware and awake, without Obsession. Funa’s practice is mainly concerned with the relationship between the realities of everyday life, the perceived connection between authority and many areas of social life such as different power structures, ethnic groups, and the fictional space of propaganda for the concept of ‘perfection’ in an ideological system, and utopian landscape. Therefore, the work is politically charged, subtly engaged in pastiche as a satirizing style of propaganda. The work of Funa is rich in reference, parody and irony of the uniformity of cultures. In a letter to his brother, Van Gogh misidentified the moth as a ‘death’s head’ (its distinctive skull shape made famous by Silence of the Lambs). The painting was later renamed when it was determined to have been a ‘great peacock’ moth. In light of that, we wanted to explore how classification can derail our perception. Aisha’s work recently has involved taking images and then cutting out and rearranging aspects of them before re-incorporating them into the image itself, half camouflaged. Somewhere in the poster a small forward slash lingers to one side of a rectangular piece of the image. This piece was selected then copied and pasted from the original image, before being dragged and dropped to cover over the words ‘death’s head’ and ‘great peacock’ which were typed either side of the slash. The computerised version of the photograph and the typed words are in some way immaterial but also there as notional traces of material things. There were several alternative drafts of the poster: different moths in different locations. The faces grafted onto the moth’s backs were created using GAN (Generative Adversarial Networks) software, which generates images out of text. Van Gogh’s work reminds us that the perception of a person can never meet the world outside of them. The way of working we found – mixing digital and photographic material instead of paint – felt like a way of explaining this quality in his work, and this complex relationship. It also chimed with our recent experiences, that of feeling embedded and sometimes lost in overfamiliar surroundings, unable to identify ourselves."

 - Will Harris and Aisha Farr

Product Information

420 x 594 mm (A2)
Digital Print on 230gsm Matt Paper
Edition of 45 (plus 5 APs)

About the Artist

Will Harris is a London-based poet and critic.
