It is thought to have been painted soon after his release from hospital in Arles in January 1889. On 7 January he wrote to his brother Theo: 'I am going to set to work again tomorrow. Van Gogh wasn't a Cancerian – he was born 30 March, which makes him an Aries – but he does seem to have exhibited several key traits of that fourth sign of the Zodiac: moody, unpredictable, self-protective and "highly sensitive to the point of being overly emotional" (if there can be such a thing.) Additionally, Cancerians are all about home, and they love their home and family more than anything else in this world. It's not such a leap to imagine that Van Gogh found in 87 Hackford Road a comforting shell, a safe house that protected his vulnerable interior, as he tested his nerves out in the rough, frenetic city. He even invited his sister to join him in the same house, and she would end up sleeping in the bedroom next to his on the third floor. Many lines from the Cancerian horoscopes that I read (my birthday is 12 July) sound like advice for Vincent; take this one, by Rob Breszny in Free Will Astrology, 3 June 2021: 'Don’t be concerned about being disloyal to your pain by being joyous.'

Product Information

420 x 594 mm (A2)
Digital Print on 230gsm Matt Paper
Edition of 45 (plus 5 APs)

* Enjoy free shipping when purchasing the Poster Bundle

About the Artist

Allison Katz was born in Montreal, Canada and currently lives and works in London. "Artery," her first solo museum exhibition in the UK, is now on view at Nottingham Contemporary until October 31, 2021 and will tour to Camden Art Center in January 2022. Therefore, the work is politically charged, subtly engaged in pastiche as a satirizing style of propaganda. The work of Funa is rich in reference, parody and irony of the uniformity of cultures. Recently Funa became a social activist. She is organizing some internet based participatory, crowd - sourcing projects, such as Exhibitionist: Curated Nail and Peep Stream. She is using the internet to work with people, questioning how the art system may be incorporated into our private lives and social activities. Art heavyweights Vincent van Gogh and Jean-Michel Basquiat have been mythologised, with their early deaths playing a key role in their posthumous fame. In a letter to his brother, Van Gogh misidentified the moth as a ‘death’s head’ (its distinctive skull shape made famous by Silence of the Lambs). The painting was later renamed when it was determined to have been a ‘great peacock’ moth. In light of that, we wanted to explore how classification can derail our perception. Aisha’s work recently has involved taking images and then cutting out and rearranging aspects of them before re-incorporating them into the image itself, half camouflaged. Somewhere in the poster a small forward slash lingers to one side of a rectangular piece of the image. This piece was selected then copied and pasted from the original image, before being dragged and dropped to cover over the words ‘death’s head’ and ‘great peacock’ which were typed either side of the slash. The computerised version of the photograph and the typed words are in some way immaterial but also there as notional traces of material things. There were several alternative drafts of the poster: different moths in different locations. The faces grafted onto the moth’s backs were created using GAN (Generative Adversarial Networks) software, which generates images out of text. Van Gogh’s work reminds us that the perception of a person can never meet the world outside of them. The way of working we found – mixing digital and photographic material instead of paint – felt like a way of explaining this quality in his work, and this complex relationship. It also chimed with our recent experiences, that of feeling embedded and sometimes lost in overfamiliar surroundings, unable to identify ourselves."

 - Will Harris and Aisha Farr

Product Information

420 x 594 mm (A2)
Digital Print on 230gsm Matt Paper
Edition of 45 (plus 5 APs)

About the Artist

Will Harris is a London-based poet and critic.
